Oh, Jersey Mike’s.

I was feeling crummy from a sinus infection this evening. When my husband Ed asked me what I wanted to do about dinner, I said, “Jersey Mike’s?”

I’m not a particular fan of sandwiches, but I love J Mike’s for one particular reason. In almost eight years of marriage, I’ve learned that if I don’t want to negotiate who is going to cook dinner or whether or not we should get takeout, the fastest way through the conversation is to suggest Jersey Mike’s.

I am mostly vegetarian. I will eat milk and eggs, and sometimes fish. When I was a teenager, I didn’t eat fish for awhile, but then when I was in college, I went to Central Europe. I ate primarily cheese, bread and dessert for a few days and was crabby as all get out. My sister suggested that I needed some protein. At dinner, I attempted to ask in German for a glass of milk. The server made clear this was a bizarre request and brought me a mug of milk that was extremely hot. And that was it. I ordered the fish.

As a mostly vegetarian ordering from Jersey Mike’s, there isn’t much that I’m excited about eating. Until recently, I would get the veggie sub (cheese, bread, lettuce and tomato) or sometimes, a tuna salad sandwich.

I was intrigued a few weeks ago when Ed forwarded me an email that said that Jersey Mike’s had introduced a new sandwich of grilled portobello mushrooms and Swiss cheese. He ordered it for me soon after, and I enjoyed it—the actual sandwich, not just the fact that I didn’t have to cook or clean up.

Last week, I ordered this sandwich and it had portobello mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and steak. Rather than send Ed back out, I ate a Lean Cuisine.

Tonight, I almost asked him to order me a second sandwich, a veggie sandwich, just in case they put steak on my mushroom sandwich again. The mushroom sandwich is less expensive than the steak sandwich, so why would they give me free steak two orders in a row? That seemed unlikely.

I ate a peanut butter sandwich for dinner.

  1. Hi! Vegetarian here too! I like how you write about an everyday event. It’s so nice to get a glimpse into someone else’s experience. The fall backs: the peanut butter sandwich and the Lean Cuisine sound so familiar. Sometimes we do eat just to get the protein. I enjoyed this snapshot…thanks for letting the reader in! Have something delicious this weekend…probably best if you make it yourself.
